Dowling College, in response to the needs expressed by school districts

Middle Childhood Education extension (grades 5-6). Students can be
certified in the areas of: Biology, Business Education, Chemistry, Earth

challenges of teaching diverse populations in grades 5-12. This program
will begin in Spring 2008, with a total of 36 credits.
Candidates will learn how to assess students while in the field and
will receive an integrated approach to differentiated instruction.
Participants will have the opportunity to learn instructional strategies
and classroom management skills from experienced master practitioners.
They will learn advanced teaching methods in their own content area
while they engage in a part-time field experience. Candidates will
receive a full-time student teaching experience in inclusive classrooms
supervised by experts in the field and have the opportunity to tutor
students with special needs.
"This program has been designed to provide graduate students with
experience that fully meets the ever-changing needs of the educational
system. Learning from master practitioners, they will gain the
understanding to help students learn in a supportive and nurturing
learning environment," said Dr. Clyde Payne, Dean of Dowling
College's School of Education. "Having the opportunity to tutor
students with diverse needs, they will learn to form productive
connections with students with varying abilities and truly make a
