Mrs. JoAnn O'Brien, Head of the Mathematics Department and Mathematics Teacher at Long Island Lutheran Middle & High School in Brookville has been named a 2007 Dowling College/News 12 Long Island Educator of the Month. Nominations were accepted from schools throughout Nassau and Suffolk counties, and a committee of distinguished educators selected the winners.

JoAnn O'Brien was nominated by Principal John H. Hinsch and was described as "the epitome of a master teacher." "She is one of the reasons why children are sent to L. I. Lutheran MS & HS and truly exemplifies the Christian life," Mr. Hinsch continued. In a letter from Mr. Hinsch, he describes how Mrs. O'Brien makes mathematics come alive for her students and how her willingness to extend herself on her students' behalf prompted the graduating class to select her to be the graduation speaker.

Under Mrs. O'Brien's leadership, the Mathletes Club has flourished and gained a competitive edge and each year she takes refresher and "stretcher" classes to improve her instruction. Her dedication is demonstrated in her responsibility for introducing Calculus BC to L. I. Lutheran. In her role as department chair, she truly leads by example and her influence is seen throughout the department. Mrs. O'Brien's other attributes include her annual participant in the senior fashion show and she has served as an adjunct instructor of mathematics at several institutions of higher learning.

Dr. Clyde Payne, Dean of Dowling's School of Education says, "Since Long Island is known for having the best teachers in the nation, and we received so many nominations from across Nassau and Suffolk, JoAnn O'Brien is truly a remarkable educator." A special feature announcing Mrs. O'Brien's award will air soon on News 12. In June the award winners and their guests will be honored at a special dinner.
