OAKDALE, NY - The Anthony Giordano Gallery at Dowling College is pleased to announce an exhibition of large-scale drawings by Joan Linder. Ms. Linder's meticulous pen and ink drawings of singular objects and figures evoke themes of war, death, banality and sexuality. Her compositions present their often culturally or emotionally charged subject matter in a detached, objective style.

In this work, various bodies and buildings are isolated in a manner that subjects them to deliberate scrutiny and encourages reflection on their larger significance. This scrutiny often unsettles conventional relationships between seeing and being seen, between male spectators and the objects of their gaze, as she compels us to look upon the exposed bodies of nude men. In other compositions, she implicates us in unsavory situations of captivity and torture. These works raise questions about both the pleasures and the discomforts of looking, and the sense of power and vulnerability that this often entails.

Located at the corner of Idle Hour Boulevard and Biltmore Avenue in Oakdale, The Anthony Giordano Gallery at Dowling College is dedicated to exhibiting and promoting contemporary, innovative and experimental work by established, unaffiliated and emerging artists as well as artists primarily from the New York tri-state metropolitan area. Through exhibitions and educational programs, the gallery reflects, reinforces, and complements the curricular dimensions of the Visual Arts Department and addresses the cultural life and enrichment of the Dowling College community, the general public, artists, and the Oakdale community at large.

Gallery hours are Wednesday through Saturday from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. and Sunday 12:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. Admission is free. For more information please call 631.244.3016 or visit us online at http://www.dowling.edu/VISart/html/giordano/.
