Spend an Afternoon with Artist Ahn Pilyun and Learn to See the Wind

Korean artist Ahn Pilyun is someone who has seen the wind, a poetic description of her love of art. On Tuesday, October 2, 2007 from 2:00 – 4:00 p.m. in the Hunt Room at Dowling College's historic Rudolph campus in Oakdale, Ahn Pilyun will inspire the audience to see that art is about more than just seeing it, but feeling it too. Pilyun will convey her excitement and the challenges of working within the confines of all different types of spaces, and how ultimately she enjoys displaying her artwork for the public to enjoy so that everyone can gain something from her artwork.

Ahn has taught as an Adjunct Associate Professor at Dowling College, and also previously had an exhibition of her work entitled Now Present at this Moment at the Anthony Giordano Art Gallery. Her formal training as a sculptor was the foundation for her work in this exhibit, which centered on concepts relating to her personal life as a woman in a patriarchal society. In Now Present at this Moment, she used reflective, multi-faceted mirrors as a metaphor for her preoccupation with changing cultural views and her time spent in Oakdale. The installations created by Ahn Pilyun spoke of her life as an artist, breaking with the traditional norms of the society from which she was born.

Ahn's previous experience includes working as a Professor of Kyunggi University, Director of the Ahn Pil Yun Urban Design Institute, Assistant Professor, Kyonggi University, Korea, Artistic Director of the Seoul Millennium Collection Opening Ceremony, and IT Director for the 2002 FIFA World Cup Opening Ceremony. Her awards include the Oita International Sculpture Contest (Japan) and the International Architecture Contest (Japan).

This event is part of a year-long lineup of special events on the theme 'Globalism: One World' and is free and open to the public. For additional information or directions, please call 631-244-3000.
