OAKDALE, NY – Future doctors, engineers, pilots, actors, singers and journalists were among the inspiring group of Wyandanch students at the Dowling College Summer Camp. GEAR UP @ Dowling College Summer Camp is a program designed for Wyandanch students to increase interest in continuing their education and attending college in the future. GEAR UP is a federally-funded project whose aim is to assist students to graduate from Wyandanch High School better prepared academically, socially, and financially to attend college.
Dowling specifically designed many activities to inspire the students to make greater achievements in education. The summer program hosted unique learning opportunities for the students that were both educational and recreational such as visiting the Riverhead Aquarium, the Brookhaven National Lab, and Cradle of Aviation Museum. When Dowling administration visited the students during their Robotics Day, all were delighted to see the student's enthusiasm when demonstrating the computerized models they had created. The students took full advantage of the brand new lab that was recently created at Dowling's Brookhaven Campus, complete with a ceiling-mounted digital data projector, a series of controllable digital cameras, moveable furniture, PC workstations for group projects, and several laptop computers. Having received training in robotics at Dowling, the School of Education's new teachers are fully prepared to enrich the science, mathematics, and technology K-12 curriculum with robots in the classroom.
Dr. Rhoda Miller, Director of Student Support Services, feels that "The GEAR UP Summer Program has enabled students to engage in academic and cultural experiences designed to enhance the science curriculum which they will face in the 9th grade."
