Dowling College Psi Chi Wins Eastern Region Chapter Award

The Dowling College Chapter of Psi Chi (the National Honor Society in Psychology) will receive the Eastern Region Chapter Award, along with a check for $500, in a presentation at the upcoming Eastern Psychological Association meeting in Washington, D.C.

The Psi Chi Regional Chapter Awards are given to the Chapters that best achieve Psi Chi's purpose: "to encourage, to stimulate, and to maintain excellence in scholarship of the individual members in all fields, particularly in psychology, and to advance the science of psychology."

Comprising 11 states, the District of Columbia, and Canadian chapters adjacent to the Northeast, the Eastern Region represents more than 300 colleges and universities and constitutes the largest component of the National Honor Society in Psychology, according to Dr. Robert Youth, Professor of Psychology at Dowling and faculty advisor for the Chapter.

The Dowling College Chapter of Psi Chi received recognition from the National Psi Chi Executive Council for its varied civic and campus activities. Stephanie Moore, Chapter President, notes that the group conducts an annual Thanksgiving Food Drive for the needy; participates regularly in College blood drives; brings speakers to campus; holds Fall and Spring Psychology Dinners at off-campus restaurants; and supports the Lucien Buck Excellence in Psychology Scholarship. In addition, Dowling College Chapter members have participated in regional meetings in Danbury, CT, Boston, MA, Nashua, NH, Baltimore, MD, and Salem, MA, during the past 3 years.

The Psychology Club / Psi Chi Chapter at Dowling College was founded in 1977. The national organization is now celebrating its 75th anniversary. Membership in Psi Chi is by invitation. The organization is open to students who excel in their studies in the field and overall. Dr. Mitchell Laube, Assistant Professor of Psychology, is co-advisor for the Chapter.

Dowling College will host the Long Island Psychology Conference, the result of the Psi Chi Chapter having received a $1,000 grant to sponsor the activity.
