Dowling Undergraduate Student Presents Groundbreaking Research for Pharmaceutical Community
Typically it is the professors from colleges who attend conferences to present their research, but at Dowling College, it is the undergraduate students. Daniel Badia, a Biology Major at Dowling, attended the 107th General Meeting of American Society of Microbiology in Toronto, Canada in May. He presented a poster titled "Production of Different Structural Analogs of Sophorolipids and Measurement of its Antimicrobial Activity".
Dan's innovative work was carried out under the guidance of Dr. Vishal Shah, Professor of Biology. Dan's trip was funded mainly through grant support to Dowling College. "This was such an exceptional opportunity for a student to have and we were proud to have such a dedicated student represent our institution," said Dr. Vishal Shah. "Dowling is unique in their dedication to providing students with opportunities to expand their professional experience, in addition to helping their personal confidence."
A Dowling biology degree prepares students to enter a science-related career after graduation and they will also be prepared to pursue post-graduate education in the biological sciences or post-graduate pre-professional studies. "This was an exciting experience for me and I was lucky to participate in this conference because it truly enhances my professional development," said Dan Badia.
Dan feels that not only is he escalating his personal growth, but he is happy to be doing work that is helping the pharmaceutical community as well. Sophorolipids are a class of biosurfactants produced by a yeast and have shown to have pharmaceutical applications. By creating different types of Sophorolipids, scientists have developed new molecules that could have different therapeutic applications.
