OAKDALE, NY – Ann Tebbutt, a science teacher in the Sachem Central School District since 1998, has been named a 2007 Dowling College/News 12 Long Island Educator of the Month. Nominations were accepted from schools throughout Nassau and Suffolk counties, and a committee of distinguished educators selected the winners.

Mrs. Tebbutt was commended for "emerging not only as an outstanding teacher of science, but a true teacher leader committed to nurturing her profession as well as her students," by Charles Murphy, Superintendent of Schools. Her extraordinary teaching skills were shown when all of Mrs. Tebbutt's students passed the Living Environment Regents Exam this past June.

In a letter of recommendation from Superintendent Charles Murphy, Mrs. Tebbutt is described as "demanding yet compassionate; driven yet has a sense of humor." He states that this is best evidenced on the annual Earth Day celebration when Mrs. Tebbutt dons quasi-safari like attire with make-up reflecting vegetation, and a unique necklace made up of dried feces for a truly organic experience! She also leads the building's annual trek up to Frost Valley where the students get to experience the outdoors, science in a natural setting, while learning team building skills.

Dr. Clyde Payne, Dean of Dowling's School of Education says, "Since Long Island is known for having the best teachers in the nation, and we received so many nominations from across Nassau and Suffolk, Ann Tebbutt is truly a remarkable educator." A special feature announcing Mrs. Tebbutt's award has aired on News 12. In June the award winners and their guests will be honored at a special dinner.
