OAKDALE, NY – Diane D'Allesandro, a third grade teacher at Burr Intermediate School in the Commack School District, has been named a 2007 Dowling College/News 12 Long Island Educator of the Month. Nominations were accepted from schools throughout Nassau and Suffolk counties, and a committee of distinguished educators selected the winners.
Mrs. D'Allesandro was commended for consistently demonstrating enthusiasm, innovation, and genuine concern for her students, their parents, and her colleagues. In a letter from Charles Heppeler, Jr., Principal, Mrs. D'Allesandro is noted for the "challenging and creative program she presents to students that offers them the opportunity to think and perform at the highest level during lessons and unit and theme studies."
Mrs. D'Allesandro proves her dedication by her involvement with numerous causes. In an effort to strengthen their character, her students write letters to soldiers in Iraq through the Verizon Telecom Pioneers, collect supplies for students in need, and collect food for the needy. Mrs. D'Allesandro states "I have had the opportunity to bring a real life awareness of compassion and respect to my children and class. I had the opportunity to bring my class to a nursing home to celebrate my grandmother's 100th birthday. Having something for her to look forward to has always been an inspiration for her to keep living."
Dr. Clyde Payne, Dean of Dowling's School of Education says, "Since Long Island is known for having the best teachers in the nation, and we received so many nominations from across Nassau and Suffolk, Diane D'Allesandro is truly a remarkable educator." A special feature announcing Mrs. D'Allesandro's has aired on News 12. In June the award winners and their guests will be honored at a special dinner.
