OAKDALE, NY – Mrs. Karen DeFranco, a fourth grade teacher in Dogwood Elementary School in the Smithtown School District, has been named a 2007 Dowling College/News 12 Long Island Educator of the Month. Nominations were accepted from schools throughout Nassau and Suffolk counties, and a committee of distinguished educators selected the winners.

A fellow colleague of Mrs. DeFranco's describes her as "intelligent, having wonderful insight, empathy, and intuition that sets her apart. She is an educational torch, passing her bright light on to all that she meets".

Principal Karen Ricigliano believes that "one of Mrs. DeFranco's greatest contributions to her teaching is her desire to teach her children lifelong lessons". Mrs. DeFranco goes far beyond the curriculum she is mandated to cover, giving generously of her own time beyond the school day. Mrs. DeFranco is involved with Writer's Workshop, writing the annual 5th grade play, serving as a mentor for a new teacher, participating as a member of a School Improvement Team/Project SAVE committee member and sponsoring a co-curricular activity, "Awesome Authors" for students.

Dr. Clyde Payne, Dean of Dowling's School of Education says, "Since Long Island is known for having the best teachers in the nation, and we received so many nominations from across Nassau and Suffolk, Karen DeFranco is truly a remarkable educator". A special feature announcing Mrs. DeFranco's award has aired on News 12. In June the award winners and their guests will be honored at a special dinner.
