OAKDALE, NY – Sharon Lipsky, a special education teacher in the Children's Learning Center in Roosevelt, has been named a 2007 Dowling College/News 12 Long Island Educator of the Month. Nominations were accepted from schools throughout Nassau and Suffolk counties, and a committee of distinguished educators selected the winners.
Ms. Lipsky has been teaching at the Children's Learning Center for the past four years, after working in the public school system. Soon after she started at CLC, Ms. Lipsky became the teacher of a class for children learning to use augmentative communication devices as their primary means of communication. The CLC is a 12 month school for children ages 2-21 who have special needs ranging from mild to severe and who have speech/language delays, cerebral palsy, mental retardation, and/or orthopedic/health impairments.
According to Principal Diane Berger, "Ms. Lipsky has committed herself not only to teach her students how to communicate using these sophisticated, electronic communication devices, but she does it in a way that the students are enchanted by the lessons." As Ms. Lipsky's teaching assistant writes, "The world may not see her students as being as capable as other children, but to Sharon, they are inspirational!"
Dr. Clyde Payne, Dean of Dowling's School of Education says, "Since Long Island is known for having the best teachers in the nation, and we received so many nominations from across Nassau and Suffolk, Sharon Lipsky is truly a remarkable educator." A special feature announcing Ms. Lipsky award has aired on News 12. In June the award winners and their guests will be honored at a special dinner.
