Dowling College Is Proud to Announce Inaugural Performance of Alma Mater at Commencement
OAKDALE, NY – Dowling College is proud to have an Alma Mater for the first time in the College's history. The premiere performance of the Alma Mater will be sung by the Dowling College Chorus at the Commencement Ceremony on Tuesday, May 22nd at Nassau Veteran's Memorial Coliseum.
The Alma Mater is entitled We Stand Taller and is written by Walt Sargent and Olivia Marie. Olivia Marie's inspiration for a Dowling Alma Mater was born of participation in the October reception for the Golden Lions Men's Soccer Team celebrating their 2006 NCAA Championship. The reception also celebrated the Golden Lions Ladies' Volleyball Team in reaching Elite Eight status in the NCAA games. Olivia Marie exclaims, "What an inspiring, uplifting celebration it was. If only we had been able to join together and sing for joy! Thanks to Walt Sargent and The Island Songwriter Showcase, today my dream is fulfilled. We dedicate this Alma Mater to Dowling faculty, administration, graduates, parents, coaches and Golden Lions all".
Dowling College President, Robert J. Gaffney, feels that "having an alma mater will provide greater unity to the Dowling College community. We're grateful to Olivia Marie and Walt Sargent for their hard work."
The Dowling College Chorus, directed by Ronald Armanini, is thrilled to be a part of the first public performance of the Alma Mater.
Dowling College would like to thank The Island Songwriter Showcase (ISS) for their help in creating the Alma Mater. The ISS is a Long Island-based organization of songwriters, lyricists, producers, engineers, performers, and DJ's with a common purpose: to develop and support musical talent through community workshops, peer review and live performances. The success of the ISS continues in the tradition of a volunteer organization for the art of songwriting. The ISS web-page is www.islandsongwriters.org.
