OAKDALE, NY – Ms. Minni Bates, an art teacher at Powells Lane Elementary School in the Westbury Public Schools, has been named a 2006 Dowling College/News 12 Long Island Educator of the Month. Nominations were accepted from schools throughout Nassau and Suffolk counties, and a committee of distinguished educators selected the winners.
As an art teacher, Ms. Bates is well known through the school district, particularly for the many initiatives that she has started. The Artist is Residence Program, begun by her, continues to flourish under her leadership. This program helps children to more fully develop their artistic capabilities. Another initiative begun by Ms. Bates focuses on nurturing students' affect. In the Tomorrows Leaders Can Club (TLC), many students have been rescued because of their membership in this guidance driven association.
According to Powells Lane Elementary School Principal John Ogilvie, "Dedication, talent and an abundant enthusiasm are hallmarks of her excellence." In his letter of recommendation Principal Ogilvie claims that when Ms. Bates' after school programs ended in May, children were seen in tears!
Dr. Clyde Payne, Dean of Dowling's School of Education says, "Since Long Island is known for having the best teachers in the nation, and we received so many nominations from across Nassau and Suffolk, Minni Bates is truly a remarkable educator." A special feature announcing Ms. Bates's award has aired on News 12. In June the award winners and their guests will be honored at a special dinner.
