OAKDALE, NY - LaCharnne Thompson, a first grade teacher at the Jackson Annex Elementary School in Hempstead, has been named a 2007 Dowling College/News 12 Long Island Educator of the Month. Nominations were accepted from schools throughout Nassau and Suffolk counties, and a committee of distinguished educators selected the winners.
Ms. Thompson, who has been an educator for the past twenty three years, was commended for teaching in a district where children come to school with a plethora of problems, and instilling in them a love for learning that they will take with them for a lifetime. In a letter from Sally A. Herb-Thompson, Assistant Superintendent for Elementary Education, Ms. LaCharnne Thompson was noted for being "more than an accomplished educator but one who is embedded in the belief that 'all children can learn' despite any and all obstacles."
Ms. Thomson states "I provide the necessary stimulus, materials, and experiences needed in order to help children achieve goals and yet acquire knowledge at the same time. I give them the opportunity to think, reason, and be creative."
Dr. Clyde Payne, Dean of Dowling's School of Education says, "Since Long Island is known for having the best teachers in the nation, and we received so many nominations from across Nassau and Suffolk, LaCharnne Thompson is truly a remarkable educator." A special feature announcing Ms. Thomson's award has aired on News 12. In June the award winners and their guests will be honored at a special dinner.
