Dowling College Celebrates National Poetry Month on the Wave of the Future

OAKDALE, NY - April is National Poetry Month, so designated by the Academy of American Poets back in 1996. To help celebrate, Dowling College will present three special podcasts this month, all highlighting poets, poetry and the creative spirit. These podcasts will be posted online every Monday from April 9th - April 23rd. Podcasting, a term that did not exist prior to 2004, is now ubiquitous and is considered the wave of the future. As they become available they will be posted on our main podcast page at http://www.dowling.edu/library/about/poetrymonth.htm

Daniel Thomas Moran: Suffolk County Poet Laureate (Available April 9th)
Daniel Thomas Moran has served as Poet Laureate of Suffolk County since 2005. He has worked to promote and foster the art of poetry in Suffolk County and elsewhere. In this interview, in addition to reading a number of his poems, Daniel talks about the creative process and the impact of Long Island on poetry.

Dr. Luis Rivera and the Poetry of Victor Manuel Rivera-Toledo (Available April 16th)
Dr. Luis Rivera, Associate Professor of Finance at Dowling's Townsend School of Business, describes and reads from the works of his father, Victor Manual Rivera-Toledo. A Guatemalan diplomat serving in New York City, Victor wrote and published poems that spoke of his longing for his home country, his concern for social injustice and his love of life. Dr. Rivera relates his experiences in discovering, translating and preserving his father's legacy.

The Exquisite Corpse-cast (Available April 23rd)
There are many methods and techniques to help stimulate the creative process. Exquisite Corpse is one such, in which participants successively contribute to a work of art (be it poem, painting or podcast) knowing only a fragment of the preceding segment. In this case, we asked seven poets with connections to Long Island to collaborate via voicemail in a surrealist poetry/podcast experiment. Contributors: Bill Thierfelder, Duane Esposito, Julie Sheehan, George Wallace, Jesse Ball, David Axelrod and Graham Everett.
