OAKDALE, NY - Ms. Theresa Gillan, a third grade teacher at Maplewood Intermediate School in the South Huntington School District, has been named a 2007 Dowling College/News 12 Long Island Educator of the Month. Nominations were accepted from schools throughout Nassau and Suffolk counties, and a committee of distinguished educators selected the winners.
Ms. Gillan, who has been an educator for the past 18 years, was commended for the genuine enthusiasm that she brings to her work. Principal Rosemary Baum describes Ms. Gillan as dynamic, caring, and dedicated and references a letter written by a parent, "Ms. Gillan is the kind of teacher who sees each child as an individual-she cherishes them for who they are and works hard to strengthen and challenge".
A colleague of Ms. Gillans' spoke of Theresa's impact as being a leader in an effort to create and develop a Multi-Age Pilot Program for the South Huntington School District. %quot;Theresa encouraged parents and administrators to become active participants in classroom activities. It was though these cooperative efforts that this long lasting program achieved great success."
Theresa continues to be a pioneer in her professional career. She is now involved in another new program which aspired to meet the social, emotional and academic needs of every child. Ms. Gillan claims that "One education issue that is close to my heart is inclusion. A teaching model utilizing a team class approach now exists in South Huntington. The team class fosters an environment filled with compassion, consideration and respect for all its members."
Dr. Clyde Payne, Dean of Dowling's School of Education says, "Since Long Island is known for having the best teachers in the nation, and we received so many nominations from across Nassau and Suffolk, Theresa Gillan is truly a remarkable educator." A special feature announcing Ms. Gillan's award has aired on News 12. In June the award winners and their guests will be honored at a special dinner.
