Sharon Robinson To Deliver Dowling College Commencement Address

Author, Baseball Executive Is Daughter Of Baseball Legend Jackie Robinson

Sharon Robinson, author, baseball executive, and daughter of baseball legend Jackie Robinson, will address an estimated 1,000 graduates and their families at Dowling College's 42nd Commencement ceremony on Sunday, May 23 at the Nassau Veteran's Memorial Coliseum in Uniondale, NY.

Ms. Robinson is Vice President of Educational Programming for Major League Baseball and the author of several books, the most recent of which is "Promises To Keep: How Jackie Robinson Changed America", a photographic children's biography about her father, the first African-American to play major league baseball.

Ms. Robinson has also authored "Jackie's Nine: Jackie Robinson\'s Values to Live By", an anthology which explores the nine values that helped her father achieve his goals. Other books include the romance novel "Still The Storm", and the memoir "Stealing Home".

In addition to her writing career, Ms. Robinson is an educational consultant for Major League Baseball. In this capacity, she oversees school and community-based educational programs, including Breaking Barriers, In Sports, In Life; which is designed to empower students with strategies to help them face obstacles in their lives. The message is delivered by examining the values demonstrated in the lives of Jackie Robinson and many of today's baseball stars. Since its inception in 1997, the program has reached over nine million children across the United States, Puerto Rico and Canada.

Prior to joining Major League Baseball, Ms. Robinson had a 20-year career as a nurse-midwife and educator. She has taught at Yale, Columbia, Howard and Georgetown, directed Rev. Jesse L. Jackson's PUSH for Excellence program from 1985 to 1990 and was a fund-raiser for The United Negro College Fund and A Better Chance.

Ms. Robinson received her Bachelor's degree from Howard University in 1973 and her Master's degree from Columbia University in 1976. She went on to receive a post-Master's Certificate in Teaching from the School of Nursing at the University of Pennsylvania. In 1998, Ms. Robinson received her Doctor of Humane Letters, honoris causa, from Medaille College.

Ms. Robinson currently serves on the Board of Directors of the Jackie Robinson Foundation and the Roberto Clementé Sports City Complex in Carolina, Puerto Rico.
