Connect at Dowling College for the History of Long Island Railroads
OAKDALE, NY – Learn about the history of the LIRR as it relates to Long Island in a discussion will encompass the relationship of the LIRR from its inception in 1834 to the present day. In conjunction with Dowling College's Annual Theme of "Celebrating Long Island" Robert C. Sturm will be presenting the History of Long Island Railroads on Wednesday, April 18, 2007 at 7:00 p.m. in the Fortunoff Hall Hunt Room at Dowling College's historic Rudolph Campus in Oakdale.
The primary focus will be on the role of rail transportation on the evolving character of the communities of Long Island. The issues of technology, financing and government oversight will be interwoven with the roles played by strong executives and the takeover by the Pennsylvania Railroad. Real estate promotion, Manhattan access, the World Wars, the Great Depression and the labor movement will also be included in the presentation.
The events leading to the ultimate takeover by New York State and the creation of the MTA will be discussed, along with a commentary on the current condition of the LIRR and its place in the community.
Presenter and expert Robert Sturm is a native Long Islander, having lived in Queens, Nassau and Suffolk Counties and currently residing in Moriches. He is a graduate of the United States Merchant Marine Academy and has over 40 years experience in the transportation industry, including positions at the LIRR and the MTA. He is currently writing a history of the LIRR covering the period from 1834 to 1960.
