Long Island Artist in Focus: William Sidney Mount - The Education of an Artist
Dowling Presents 'An Afternoon of Art' to Celebrate Long Island In conjunction with Dowling College's annual theme "Celebrating Long Island," Eva Greguski will present some of the most important works from the great nineteenth-century genre painter, William Sidney Mount. This event will take place on Thursday, March 22, 2007 from 2:00 - 4:00 p.m. in the Fortunoff Hall Hunt Room on Dowling College's historic Rudolph Campus.
The presentation will trace his career through his early studies at the National Academy of Design, through his work done as a commissioned artist who produced some of the first American prints for a European market, to his death shortly after the Civil War in 1868. Born in Setauket in 1807, Mount matured during one of the most exciting periods in the history of American art. Well-known and popular favorites, such as Farmer's Nooning and The Banjo Player will be considered, along with some of his lesser-known works.
Eva Greguski has been the Art Curator, Librarian and Archivist at The Long Island Museum of American Art, History and Carriages since 1997. She holds advanced degrees in American History and Library Science from the Palmer School, CW Post University. She has curated dozens of exhibitions and lectured on a variety of topics relating to Long Island art, including Louis Comfort Tiffany, Stanford White, and Childe Hassam. She is currently researching an exhibition that will focus on the Russian émigré artists David Burliuk, Nicolai Cikovsky and the Soyer Brothers, and is due to be hung at the museum in Spring 2008.
