See Long Island Through the Imaginative Eyes of a Poet
Discover the naturalist within yourself by attending a presentation by Poet George Held, where he will read his poetry in praise and celebration of the varied beauties of Long Island's terrain. Celebrating the Value of Long Island's Varied Landscapes will take place on Wednesday, March 7 at 6:00 p.m. in the Fortunoff Hall Hunt Room in Dowling's historic Rudolph Campus in Oakdale.
George Held believes that the wonderful land and sea vistas of Long Island should be greatly appreciated and valued by all residents of the land. He would like future generations to continue his work in preserving the breathtaking landscapes captured by the imaginative eye of painters and poets on the island. He will explain how we must conserve the beauty we have inherited from Native Americans. potato farmers, and fisherman of the past. George hopes to enlighten guests so they will fully appreciate the natural environment of Long Island.
George Held is the author of the poetry collections, Winged and Grounded, which evoke his close relationship to nature and the preservation of habitats. He is an activist is nature conservation and serves as a member of the Board of Directors of the South Fork Natural History Society and Museum, SoFo, in Bridgehampton, Long Island. He lives in Sag Harbor and New York with his wife, Cheryl.
George Held is a retired professor of English who taught for 37 years at Queens College and was a Fulbright lecturer in Czechoslovakia. Hundreds of his poems have appeared in such journals as Commonweal and Confrontation. Nominated five times for the Pushcart Prize, he is the author of many poetry chapbooks, including, Open and Shut, which was a winner of the 1999 Talent House Press Chapbook Contest. With the artist Roz Dimon, he published Absolut Death and Others (2000), a collection of her illustrations and his verse. His latest collection of poems, W Is for War, was published in 2006, and Finishing Line Press will publish his poetry chapbook The Art of Writing and Others in 2007.
Professor George Held also writes essays and reviews books for such publications as The American Book Review and The Philadelphia Inquirer. For many tears he has co-edited The Ledge, a nationally distributed journal of poetry and fiction, and he edited an anthology of verse entitled Touched by Eros (The Live Poets Society, 2002).
