Little Known Facts about Great Feats - Event Celebrating Long Island Reveals Insights to Our Unique Home

Long Islanders have signed the Declaration of Independence, put people on the moon, created great fortunes and elected a President of the United States. These are just some of the stories that will be revealed at the lecture "Did You Know?....Interesting Facts about Long Island" featuring Historian Noel Gish on Tuesday, February 20 at 7:30 p.m. in the Fortunoff Hall Ballroom, located at Dowling's historic Rudolph Campus in Oakdale, N.Y. The event is free and open to the public and is part of Dowling College's year-long lineup of special events "Celebrating Long Island".

The history of Long Island is rich with fascinating stories that make our island of great value to our nation and to the rest of the world. This lecture will cover little known facts of interest about the island that English colonists called "Long". Many people that have lived or worked on Long Island contributed to society including scientists, writers, and artists. We have a population that is greater than many of the states and have beautiful landmarks that make us well known. These tales will come to life in the presentation by Mr. Noel Gish.

Noel Gish taught history at Hauppauge High School for 35 years. In 1973 he instituted one of the first Long Island History courses for high school students in Nassau and Suffolk Counties. Mr. Gish authored a Long Island studies program for Graphic Learning in 1980 and in 1996 authored Smithtown 1660-1929: Looking Back Through the Lens for the Smithtown Historical Society.

Currently on the board for the Suffolk County Historical Society, he is also Chairperson for the Historical Advisory Board for the Town of Smithtown.

Mr. Gish has worked with the New York State Department of Education, Newsday and News 12 on numerous local history projects. Retired from his regular teaching assignments, he now works with school districts and teacher centers in promoting the use of Long Island Studies in the classroom.
