Dowling College Announces Events To Support Student Awareness
Dowling is committed to providing a supportive learning environment and hosting events that foster a greater understanding and respect for all. Dowling is proud to announce two upcoming events that will bring light to important issues in society. These events support Dowling's hope that students will find fulfillment for being true to themselves.
On Monday, February 12, 2007 Dowling is hosting the First Annual Dr. Bill's Birthday Bash, a fundraiser for the Matthew Shepard-Sakia Gunn Scholarship. In 2006, Dr. Bill Thierfelder of the English Department at Dowling College founded the Matthew Shepard-Sakia Gunn Scholarship to give financial support to a lesbian, gay, bisexual, or transgender high school student entering the College as a freshman. This event will feature live entertainment, light refreshments, and an LGBT Speaker. The Birthday Bash is from 5:00p.m. - 7:00p.m. in the Fortunoff Hall Hunt Room at Dowling College's Rudolph Campus in Oakdale. The ticket prices are as follows and proceeds from Ticket sales go directly to the Scholarship Fund. Tickets may be purchased at the door or in advance by calling 631-244-3377.
Red…$10 (*Suggested Student Donation) Orange…$25
Yellow…$50 Green…$75
Blue…$100 Violet…$250
Rainbow…$500
On Monday, March 5, 2007 at 7:00 p.m. in room 110 in Fortunoff Hall in the Rudolph Campus in Oakdale, Sigma Tau Delta and The Diversity Project will screen the film "L.I.E." as part of Dowling College's annual theme of "Celebrating Long Island". The highly provocative topics of the film include house break-ins on Long Island, teenage gangs, and pedophilia; all handled with enormous taste and reserve. If you're looking for a thought-provoking, provocative evening, then this film and the discussion to follow is for you. It should also be noted that this film would not be recommended for young viewers. The film is rated R-17 however, mature teens and their parents might find this film a useful tool for discussing some very serious issues that affect all young people.
