Author of Idle Hours: The Grace and the Glory to Read at Dowling College
Author of the historical fiction novel, Idle Hours: The Grace and the Glory, Pat Hogeboom, will entertain listeners by reading stories filled with adventure from her book as well as share the fascinating local history that led to this story. Hogeboom will share her scintillating stories at Dowling College on February 8, 2007 at 5:30 p.m. in the Conservatory at the historic Rudolph Campus in Oakdale. This book, which uses the South Shore of Long Island as the backdrop for its intriguing stories, will be available for sale and signing by the author.
Set in the late nineteenth century, Idle Hours: The Grace and the Glory, is historical fiction, but because the basis for the story revolves around the Vanderbilt estate known as "Idle Hour", many readers feel an extraordinary connection to its cast of characters, whose names and tales are part of our Long Island culture. Cleverly blending documented history with fiction, Hogeboom was able to imagine an entire world of adventure and longing, of friendship and hope.
Through interviews with local residents and business owners and by gathering research from newspapers and books, Hogeboom learned about Consuelo, the daughter of W.K. Vanderbilt, who, despite happiness in her early years, developed sadness after being forced into marrying a man she did not love. Hogeboom created a special friend for Consuelo, Laurel, to accompany her through her fascinating journey and to demonstrate how friendship can transcend socioeconomic differences. Astonishing in its intimate portrayal of the lives of these characters, this tale will leave readers reveling in this rich blend of history, culture, and entertainment.
Readers of Idle Hours: The Grace and the Glory exclaim "I loved Idle Hours! What a terrific story. Once I started reading it, I couldn't put it down. It brought me great joy! Pat is a great storyteller. With so many of the names and places being familiar, it made it so much more interesting."
