Dowling College Announces Results of Annual Long Island Economic Survey and Opinion Poll

Dowling College's Townsend School of Business has announced the results of the 13th Annual Long Island Economic Survey and Opinion Poll. This annual survey was compiled along with the accounting firm Albrecht, Viggiano, Zureck & Company and was mailed to approximately 6,000 Long Island business owners. The 2006-2007 Survey results continue to confirm the resilience of the diversified Long Island economy.

The executive summary is as follows:

  • 43% of respondents report actual revenue growth of over 5% for 2006.
  • 48% project their net income for 2006 to be higher than 2005.
  • 56% have been impacted by increases in short term interest rates.
  • 59% have increased the price of their products or services due to the rise in oil prices.
  • 42% of the respondents' adult children live and work off Long Island.
  • 47% plan some type of facility expansion during 2007.
  • 55% project residential real estate prices will decrease in 2007.
  • 83% support school district consolidation in order to reduce property taxes.
  • 76% predict the Dow will be higher in June 2007 than it was in October 2006.
  • The confidence rating for the Long Island economy has increased slightly to 6.1 from 6.0, on a scale of 1-10.
"The findings in the report are positive and optimistic," said Elana Zolfo, Vice President at Dowling. Fewer companies are planning to leave Long Island in the future. However, there is concern about maintaining a skilled and educated workforce on Long Island. Local employers are addressing these issues by teaming up with educators and government officials to retain our young people in the workforce."
