Long Island High School Students to Compete in National Math Competition at Dowling College

High school students from around Long Island will demonstrate their mathematics skills during the American Mathematics Competition, AMC 12 Contest on Wednesday, February 21, 2007 at Dowling College's historic Rudolph Campus in Oakdale. The exam will be given from 3:00 pm-5:00 pm in room 101A of the Kramer Science Center. A tutorial session for participants is scheduled for late January. All Long Island schools are invited to participate in the competition.

Dowling is the only higher education site in New York State offering the event and this is the first time that Dowling's Math Department has hosted, according to Dr. Fred Rispoli, Professor of Mathematics at Dowling and the event organizer. "This will be an exciting event for our department and for Dowling," he said. "By hosting the AMC 12, we hope to stimulate the high schools of Long Island in mathematics and take a leadership role in their mathematics education".

The nationally recognized AMC 12 is dedicated to the goal of strengthening the mathematical skills of the nation's youth. The AMC 12, is geared for 11th and 12th grade students and features a 25-question, 75-minute multiple choice examination based on secondary school math.

"The AMC 12 is a kind of first-level tryout for Long Island high school mathematics students," Dr. Rispoli explained."The AMC 12 is a great forum to get young people interested in mathematics, not just as a class, but as a hobby."

In 2005, more than 413,000 students in more than 5,100 schools participated in the AMC contests. For more information about the AMC 12 contest at Dowling, contact Dr. Rispoli at rispolif@dowling.edu. For more information on the AMC, visit www.unl.edu/amc.
