Ten Long Island residents have been awarded $10,000 and $20,000 scholarships through the National Science Foundation (NSF) Robert Noyce Scholarship Program at Dowling College. The funds were made available by a four-year $500,000 grant awarded to Dowling in August of 2003.

The Noyce Scholarship, named after Intel founder Robert Noyce, is awarded to a student who is pursuing New York State teacher certification in one or more areas of math or science. The NSF grant provides $10,000 per year for junior and senior undergraduate science and math majors in Dowling's teacher training program. In addition, $10,000 awards were given to "career changers", individuals with undergraduate math, computer science or science degrees who pursue their teacher certification at Dowling on the graduate level. Recipients will obtain New York State teacher certification in one or more areas of math or science and are required to complete two years of teaching in a school district that has a high need for math and science teachers for each year of scholarship or stipend.

Juan Alicia of Medford, Adriana Aracri of Jamesport, Gina Ortolani of St. James, Dana Scoglio of Port Jefferson, Nicole Stella of Bellport, and John Verbeke of Babylon, were each awarded $20,000 scholarships ($10,000 each year for two academic years). One-year, $10,000 scholarships were awarded to Jenelle Burgos of Ridge, Paul Guzzardo of Coram, Peter Osswald of Lindenhurst, and Joseph Rezza of Brentwood, in the category of "career-changers."

Dr. Lori Zaikowski (email: ZaikowsL@dowling.edu), Associate Professor of Chemistry and Natural Sciences, is Director of the program at Dowling, and mentor for the science recipients. Dr. John A. Craven (email: CravenJ@dowling.edu ), Associate Professor of Human Development and Learning, mentors the scholars in regards to education requirements. Professor Sandra Monteferrante (email: MontefeS@dowling.edu), Professor of Mathematics, serves as mentor for the mathematics recipients.

Scholarship applications are being accepted for the 2004-2005 academic year. Forms may be obtained at the Dowling College website (www.dowling.edu) or by contacting the Office of Enrollment Services.
