Dowling College Hosts Third Annual Long Island Eco-Summit - Energy Alternatives, Water Issues In Spotlight

A presentation on energy alternatives for Long Island by Dr. Lee Koppelman, Center for Regional Policy Studies, is among the highlights of Long Island Eco-Summit III - 2006 on Tuesday, November 14, 2006 from 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. at Dowling College's historic Rudolph Campus in Oakdale.

The event will also feature workshops and panel discussions on other hot-button Long Island environmental issues such as wetland loss, sea level rise, water quality, wildlife conservation, and land use. The region's leading researchers will discuss their work in these and other areas, and various preservation initiatives will be reviewed.

A tour of Dowling's Kramer Science Center's Coral Reef and Horseshoe Crab Conservation Laboratories and event orientation will be given by Dr. John T. Tanacredi, Chairman of Dowling's Department of Earth and Marine Sciences. Participants will be welcomed by New York State Assemblywoman Ginny Fields. A continental breakfast and buffet-style lunch is also planned.

Among the workshops offered are: Energy: No Free Lunch!; Coastal Issues: We are an Island You Know?; Aquariums, Zoos: How does Long Island Connect "Recreation" to "Conservation"?; and Our Parks and Wildlife Refuges: Exotic Species Concerns.

Featured speakers include Dr. Nicole P. Maher, Wetlands Specialist, who will speak about wetland loss and sea level rise; "Rusty" Johnson, conservationist and author of "Twilight of the Wild"; and Dr. Susan B. Elfin, from Wildlife Trust, Inc.

This symposium is the result of the efforts of Dowling College's Senior Seminar-Fall 2006. The event is free, but seating is limited and on a "first-come/first-served basis." For reservations, call 631-244-3394. This event is sponsored by Atlantis Aquarium, CRESLI, FERN, AREAC, and Dowling College.
