Mike Curry, a resident of Ridge, New York, and a 1999
graduate of Longwood High School, has been awarded the Phillip Doherty
Aviation Scholarship at Dowling College.
Curry, who served for six years in the U.S. Air Force, has compiled a
3.96 Grade Point Average while simultaneously pursuing two majors:
Aviation Management and Aeronautics/Professional Pilot. He also serves
as a flight service technician through Dowling's Work Study program.
Curry anticipates graduating in June 2007, plans to serve as a flight
instructor for Dowling, and then begin a career as an airline pilot. He
is married to wife, Esther, and enjoys spending time with their
children, Vinny, 6, and Julia, 2.
*I*ve had a great experience at Dowling,* Curry said. *The
school is very accommodating of my schedule, and the faculty is
extremely knowledgeable. They teach you more than what is required. I
feel completely prepared to join the industry*s workforce.*
The Phillip Doherty Aviation Scholarship was founded by Thomas J.
Doherty, Vice President, Eastern Region Domestic Ground Operations for
FedEx Express. A Dowling College graduate and Trustee, Doherty created
the scholarship to honor his late brother, Phillip, who was a pilot.
"I am pleased that this scholarship will benefit such a hardworking,
outstanding student," said Mr. Doherty. "Mike's dedication and
work ethic are just some of the values shared with my brother, Phillip.
It is rewarding to see my brother remembered through the budding career
of such a fine young man."
