Long Island Cemeteries & Ghosts: A Haunting Look At Local Lore

Dowling Presents a Unique Halloween Presentation

The tales of Long Island's cemeteries and the history of some of the area's most active ghosts will be the topic of back-to-back talks in the Hunt Room of Fortunoff Hall at Dowling College's historic Rudolph Campus in Oakdale, NY, on Halloween, Tuesday, October 31 at 5:30 p.m. The event is free and open to the public and part of Dowling College's yearlong line-up of special events "Celebrating Long Island".

The cemeteries on Long Island offer snapshots into the lives and times of the people who are buried there. Get all the groundbreaking insights at "There's Life in Long Island Cemeteries!", a presentation by Dr. Rhoda Miller. "Cemeteries on Long Island provide fascinating insights into rural living, state institutional burials, military activity, historically significant individuals, ethnic diversity, and cemetery curiosities," noted Dr. Miller. "Burial sites are not just spooky places to be on Halloween nights as they provide information enhancing the living…whether or not your ancestors are buried there!"

At 6:30 p.m., following Dr. Miller's presentation, guests will hear about four local hauntings and how residents set out to discover the identities of their non-living co-residents in, "A Ghostly Inheritance: The Genealogy of Ghosts", a presentation by Suzanne Garrison-Terry, Archivist and Special Collections Librarian.

"I am the unofficial 'ghost genealogist", quipped Ms. Terry. "Not all people who live or work in haunted buildings run screaming for the nearest exorcist. Some people don't want to get rid of 'their ghosts': they only want to know who they are, and if possible, why they are there. That's where I come in! I help people trace the genealogy of their ghost and perhaps learn the story behind their continued presence."

"Celebrating Long Island" is made possible through the generous support of the Gardiner Foundation.
