The Dowling College Music Department invites you to experience the collective energy and artistry of Super Mande on November 1, 2006 from 8:30 p.m. to 10:00 p.m. in the Fortunoff Hall Ballroom at Dowling College*s historic Rudolph Campus in Oakdale.
Super Mande is comprised of New York City's finest West African musicians renowned for their distinctive fusion of tradition and innovation within the African popular musical idiom. Most of the group members are jalilu- practitioners of ancient performance traditions dating back to the 13th century Empire of Mali.
A testimony to the vitality and creativity of immigrant communities in America, these performers seamlessly combine elements of urban life in New York with African musical traditions. Their songs exemplify the way in which New York-based jalilu integrate musical ideas and concepts from their African heritage into the fabric of their daily lives. Super Mande features Abdoulaye *Djoss* Diabate, who has spent some twenty years performing African contemporary and popular music. Abdoulaye's voice has been described as having an indefinable, penetrating quality that touches deep into one*s heart and soul and lifts the spirits of the listener.
This event is free and open to the public. For more information, please contact David Racanelli, Chair of Music Department, or Ronald Armanini, Coordinator of Musical Concerts, at 631-244-3351.
