Take a Penny Postcard Tour of Long Island at Dowling College

Event Celebrating Long Island Includes Display and Sale of Vintage Postcards

Stunning mansions, steam locomotives, and unpaved main streets are just some of the images of old Long Island preserved forever on penny postcards. These wonderful scenes come to life in "A Penny Postcard Tour of Long Island", a presentation by Historian Noel Gish with displays by members of the Long Island Postcard Club on Wednesday, October 18 at 7:00 p.m. in the Fortunoff Hall Ballroom, located at Dowling's historic Rudolph Campus in Oakdale, N.Y. The event is free and open to the public and is part of Dowling College's yearlong lineup of special events "Celebrating Long Island".

Before there was email and cell phones, there was the postcard. Purchased for a few pennies and delivered for a cent, it was for decades the cheapest form of long-range communication. Featuring the notable buildings and picturesque vistas of the day, these images are today a unique way to glimpse Long Island's past. What stood where parking lots and strip malls now sprawl? Remember, reminisce, and imagine, "What if?" through the tales of Mr. Gish.

Guests will enjoy the added treat of viewing and purchasing a wide array of vintage postcards displayed by members of the Long Island Postcard Club.

Mr. Gish taught history at Hauppauge High School for 35 years. In 1973 he instituted one of the first Long Island history courses for high school students in Nassau and Suffolk County. Mr. Gish authored a Long Island studies program for Graphic Learning in 1980 and in 1996 he authored Smithtown 1660-1929 Looking Back Through the Lens for the Smithtown Historical Society. Currently on the Board for the Suffolk County Historical Society, he is also Chairperson for the Historical Advisory Board for the Town of Smithtown. Mr. Gish has worked with the New York State Department of Education, Newsday and Channel 12 on numerous local history projects. Retired from his regular teaching assignments, he now works with various school districts and teacher centers to promote the use of Long Island studies in the classroom.
