Dowling College Minority Teacher Program Lauded By National Educators
The Center for Minority Teacher Development and Training (CMTDT) at Dowling College was recently visited by a delegation of collegiate officials from Austin, Texas. The Center, through support services ranging from scholarships to job placement, addresses the national and local problem of a low percentage of minority teachers in the classroom. The paths of the Texas and Dowling College colleagues crossed at the American Association of Colleges for Teacher Education (AACTE) Conference presentation in San Diego, CA where Ms. Lizette M. Washington, Director of the CMTDT, and Dr. Clyde I. Payne, Dean of Dowling's School of Education, made a presentation.
The delegation of Texas educators and not-for-profit administrators included Dr. Karen Embry Jenlink, Dean at St. Edwards University; Dr. Donetta Goodall, Vice President at Austin Community College; Ms. Eva Rios, Program Director of Capital Idea; Ms. Theresa Salinas, Counselor at Capital Idea and Ms. Ofelia Zapata, Board Member at Austin Interfaith. They visited the Center's Summer Science Institute at Brookhaven National Laboratory where students participated as teacher interns and conducted scientific field research. The site team later conversed with Dowling education professors on issues of diversity. The visit culminated with a roundtable discussion that included CMTDT partners from the Central Islip School District, Bay Shore School District and Farmingdale State University.
Dr. Jenlink stated, "I look forward to future possible collaborations with our entities and providing mutual support as we press on through challenging paths in teacher preparation."
The Center for Minority Teacher Development and Training (CMTDT) at Dowling College was established through a partnership with the U.S. Department of Education in 2003. Since its inception, the Center has served over 250 minority students enrolled in Dowling College and many more in area high schools.
