Dowling College is the third college/university on Long Island to offer a scholarship specifically for Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender (LGBT) students. The Matthew Shepard-Sakia Gunn Scholarship will award $1,000 to an incoming freshman who self-identifies as LGBT.

Established by Dowling College English professor Dr. William Thierfelder, the Matthew Shepard-Sakia Gunn Scholarship was named for two young people who lost their lives for daring to be who they were. To be eligible, the graduating high school senior must have maintained an "A" average in high school and is required to submit a 500-word essay stating the importance of the scholarship to his/her education goals. The College will announce the recipient in June of each year.

"This fund demonstrates Dowling College's commitment to LGBT youth in the hope that they will find fulfillment for being true to themselves and find gratification from the pursuit of an education, following a dream and reaching for a rewarding future," said Dr. Thierfelder.
