Dowling College Teams With Literacy Suffolk To Provide Tutor Training
Dowling College (Continuing Adult Education) has teamed with Literacy Suffolk, Inc. (LS) to offer literacy tutor training for volunteers interested in tutoring adults in ESOL (English for speakers of other languages) and basic literacy.
Those successfully completing the training workshop receive a certificate and are qualified to be volunteer tutors. Tutoring takes place in public places, usually libraries, at the mutual convenience and arrangement of the tutors and students.
"With the changing demographics on Long Island there are many ESOL (English for Speakers of Other Languages) students seeking tutors," explained Dr. Rhoda Miller, Director of Student Support Services at Dowling College and a longtime Literacy Suffolk tutor trainer. "By making the training more convenient through online work we hope to educate more tutors and in turn teach more Suffolk residents valuable language skills."
This new workshop offering is a blend of online and classroom learning. Three classroom sessions will be accentuated with online course work via software provided by Dowling. The initial class session will take place on September 27 at Dowling's Rudolph Campus in Oakdale from 6:30 p.m. - 9:30 p.m., with the following two sessions at the Suffolk Cooperative Library System (SCLS) in Bellport, on November 1 and 15, from 6 - 9 p.m.
Prospective tutors must be comfortable with computer use and have access to a DVD player. For more information, contact education director Liz Mayers at lizmayers@literacysuffolk.org or 286-1649.
