Barbara Devoti, Massapequa High School, Named Dowling College/News 12 Educator of the Month

Barbara Devoti has been awarded the Dowling College/News 12 Educator of the Month Award. Mrs. Devoti recently completed her twenty-fifth year as teacher of the Child Study Course Program at Massapequa High School, which teaches important lessons on child care responsibility.
Barbara Devoti, a home economics teacher at Massapequa High School, has been named a 2006 Dowling College/News 12 Long Island Educator of the Month. Nominations were accepted from schools throughout Nassau and Suffolk counties, and a committee of distinguished educators selected the winners.

Mrs. Devoti, who has been employed by the Massapequa School District for 33 years, recently completed her twenty fifth year as the teacher of the Child Study Course program at Massapequa High School. The program, which matches high school students with four-year-old children in the community, provides invaluable hands-on real life experience for students and provides a community service for parents.

According to Massapequa High School Principal James J. Maloney, "Over the years, this program has developed into one our most popular and successful programs." In a letter of recommendation from a former student, Mrs. Devoti is commended for her "grace, intelligence, organization and absolute love for what she does." In his letter of nomination, Principal Maloney described Mrs. Devoti as "an invaluable professional of endless energy, possessing a strong work ethic coupled with a great sense of humor."

"Mrs. Devoti teaches her students practical lessons that help them in their lives every day," said Dr. Clyde Payne, Dean of Dowling's School of Education. "They learn how to manage a household, and understand the high level of responsibility and dedication required to care for a child. She does it with a gentle grace that was most enjoyable to witness."

Prior to working for the Massapequa School District, Mrs. Devoti held administrative and teaching duties in Pennsylvania. Mrs. Devoti earned a Bachelor of Science degree from Villa Maria College in Pennsylvania and a Master of Science degree from Purdue University in Indiana.

A special feature announcing Mrs. Devoti's award will air soon on News 12. In June the award winners and their guests will be honored at a special dinner.
