Dowling College Professor and Oakdale Resident Dr. William Thierfelder Named Honorary Co-Chair of the 16th Annual LI Pride Parade & Festival in the Park

Dowling College professor and Oakdale resident Dr. William Thierfelder has been named Honorary Co-Chair of the 16th Annual Long Island Pride Parade and Festival in the Park, taking place Sunday, June 11, 2006 in the Village of Huntington and at Hecksher Park.

Themed "Power in Pride," the day-long cultural event begins at 1:00 p.m. with the Long Island Pride Parade in Huntington, and is followed by the festival in Hecksher Park. The event is expected to draw 5,000 marchers, spectators and sponsors.

Dr. Thierfelder, Associate Professor of English at Dowling College, was chosen for this honor from among hundreds of candidates because of his active involvement in human rights causes and his advocacy for the gay and lesbian community. He is actively involved in many organizations, including Long Island Pride and LIGALY (Long Island Gay and Lesbian Youth). Last year, Dr. Thierfelder led a "Journey for Safe Spaces," a 114-mile cycling trek across Long Island that raised funds to create safer schools, homes, and communities for young people in our area.

Joining Dr. Thierfelder as 2006 Honorary Co-Chairs are: Hon. Steve Israel, United States Congressman, Hon. Jon Cooper, Majority Leader, Suffolk County Legislature, Hon. Elie Mystal, Suffolk County Legislator, 15th Legislative District, Kenneth A. Shanahan, Senior Vice President of North Fork Bank, Kristen J. Nyitray, Special Collections Department & University Archives, Stony Brook University, Rev. Dr. G. Shane Hibbs, Long Island Community Fellowship, David Kilmnick, Executive Director, LIGALY, Andrew Peters, Associate Director for Program Development, Pride for Youth, and Randy, an on-air personality from 106.1 WBLI. These individuals will be honored during the Festival in the Park.
