Dowling Adds Women's Lacrosse and Men's Cross Country - McCabe and LaGiglia Named Head Coaches

Dowling College has announced the addition of women's lacrosse and men's cross country as varsity sports. The cross country team will start competition in the 2006-07 academic year while the women's lacrosse team will begin in 2007-08. The announcement is part of a strategic plan implemented by Dowling's Department of Athletics and will increase the number of varsity sports to 16.

"The addition of women's lacrosse and men's cross country are good fits for Dowling College and positions us better for success in the New York Collegiate Athletic Conference (NYCAC)," said Director of Athletics, Rick Cole, Jr. "This illustrates the continued expansion of our department and the institution's commitment to athletics."

Current Dowling College Head Women's Soccer Coach, Kerri McCabe, has been named head coach of the women's lacrosse team. McCabe was a member of Stony Brook University's inaugural women's lacrosse team and spent a year as an assistant coach for the Seawolves. Starting a new program is nothing new for McCabe. She was appointed Dowling's first head women's soccer coach in the spring of 2005 and was charged with building the program. Last year, the team finished 9-6 and advanced to the semi-finals of the ECAC Tournament. A four-year starter for the Stony Brook women's soccer team, Kerri has been a midfielder with the Long Island Lady Riders semi-professional soccer team since 2000.

In addition, The Golden Lions have named former NCAA Division I student-athlete Emliy LaGiglia Head Coach, with responsibility for both the men's and women's cross country teams. She brings with her more than 15 years of track and field and cross country experience. During her collegiate career, Emily captained the cross country and track & field teams at Montana State University. She garnered various awards and accolades for her accomplishments on and off the field, including being named MSU Student-Athlete of the Year in 2000.

Currently, Emily is a secondary English teacher and served as Head Girls Track & Field and Cross Country Coach in the Deer Park School District, where her teams were honored multiple times by the New York State Section XI Athletic Association for sportsmanship and academic accomplishments.
