Craig B. Knapp, Rocky Point School District, Named Dowling College/News 12 Educator of the Month
Craig B. Knapp, a general music/chorus teacher in the Rocky Point School District, has been named a 2006 Dowling College/News 12 Long Island Educator of the Month. Nominations were accepted from schools throughout Nassau and Suffolk counties, and a committee of distinguished educators selected the winners.
In 1998, Mr. Knapp joined the faculty at Joseph A. Edgar School in Rocky Point and, according Vice Principal Kenneth Crawford, "is the primary reason Joseph A. Edgar School has such an outstanding music and chorus program."
"Mr. Knapp engages his students in all facets of music instruction through interactive, inquiry-based lessons and recently developed numerous technology-based lessons where students can compose music, review skills, and learn new skills by using either installed software programs or the Internet," said Principal Carol Tvelia, in her nomination letter.
In addition to his teaching responsibilities, Mr. Knapp directs two separate choruses, a beginner chorus for grades three and four, and an intermediate chorus for grades four and five. Mr. Knapp also produces and directs a musical in the spring, as well as the school's winter and spring concerts.
"It was a treat to watch Mr. Knapp in action. By employing fun props and ingenious techniques, he cultivates a love and appreciation of music in all of his students," commented Dr. Clyde Payne, Dean of Dowling's School of Education upon presenting the award.
Mr. Knapp earned a Bachelor's of Music degree from the Crane School of Music at SUNY Potsdam and a Master's of Arts degree from the School of Professional Development at SUNY Stony Brook.
A special feature announcing Mr. Knapp's award will air soon on News 12. In June the award winners and their guests will be honored at a special dinner.
