As part of its year-long celebration of Jewish and Jewish-American Contributions to American Culture, Dowling College's Loft Theatre will present Mary Zimmerman's The Odyssey, a dramatic adaptation of Homer's epic poem. Zimmerman is a Jewish-American writer and author of Metamorphoses, an adaptation of Ovid's stories, which had a highly-acclaimed run on Broadway.
The performance begins as a modern young woman struggles to understand Robert Fitzgerald's translation of The Odyssey. When a classical muse emerges, the young woman is transformed into the goddess Athena, a tireless advocate for Odysseus in his struggle to get home. With a twist on this classic work, Zimmerman brings to life the story of Odysseus's ten-year journey, portraying his encounters with various characters, including Circe, the Cyclops, Poseidon, Calypso, the Sirens, and others.
Performances will take place at the Performing Arts Center on the Rudolph Campus in Oakdale on Fridays and Saturdays on April 21, 22, April 28, 29, May 5, 6, and May 12, 13 at 8 p.m.; and Sundays on April 23, April 30, May 7, and May 14 at 3 p.m.
General admission costs $12 per person. Senior citizens, children, alumni, and Dowling College students, faculty, and staff with a current valid Dowling identification card may purchase tickets at a discounted rate of $6 per person. Tickets may be purchased in advance by calling 631-244-5037 or online at www.dowling.edu/loft/reservation.htm. Reservations will be held at the box office until 15 minutes before show time.
