Patrick C. Yula, a fifth grade inclusion teacher at Powells Lane Elementary School in Westbury, has been named a 2006 Dowling College/News 12 Long Island Educator of the Month. Nominations were accepted from schools throughout Nassau and Suffolk counties, and a committee of distinguished educators selected the winners.
Mr. Yula, who has been a dedicated educator for more than thirty-five years, was honored for his cooperative, innovative approach as an inclusion teacher and for his involvement in several special projects, including the Newsday Stock Market Game and Newsday's Help-A-Family Appeal. Mr. Yula spearheaded a Saturday Academy program, which offers tutorial service for students preparing for New York State Assessment tests. Through his efforts, every child who participated at Saturday Academy showed a significant improvement in grades. Mr. Yula is also Principal of the Summer Bridge Program and is responsible for coordinating student teachers in the district.
"Over the many years that I have known him, his personality and presence have endeared him to students, parents and colleagues," said John E. Ogilvie, Principal of Powells Lane Elementary School, in his nomination letter. Dr. Susan Sciascia, the school's Director of Reading/ELA program adds, "Enthusiastically, Pat strives for greatness and always has students and colleagues share in and benefit from his efforts." Added Dr. Clyde Payne, Dean of Dowling's School of Education, "Mr. Yula is truly a role model, both for his students and fellow teachers. To sustain such enthusiasm and energy, and to initiate special projects before and after school hours, is the mark of a special teacher. It is extraordinary after 35 years of service."
Mr. Yula is a member of the New York State Academy of Teaching and Learning and an inductee of Who's Who Among America's Teachers. He has been awarded the SUNY Plattsburg Alumni Scholarship, the Old Navy Company Award, New York Hall of Science Award and Westbury Board of Education Excellence in Teaching Social Studies Award.
Mr. Yula earned a Bachelor of Arts degree from SUNY Plattsburg, a Master of Science degree from Long Island University and a professional diploma from St. John's University.
A special feature announcing Mr. Yula's award will air soon on News 12. In June the award winners and their guests will be honored at a special dinner.
