Maria Brown of Sayville High School Named Dowling College/News 12 Educator of the Month

Dr. Clyde Payne, Dean of Dowling's School of Education, congratulates Maria Brown on her award.
Maria Brown, a science teacher at Sayville High School, has been named a 2005/2006 Dowling College/News 12 Long Island Educator of the Month. Nominations were accepted from schools throughout Nassau and Suffolk counties, and a committee of distinguished educators selected the winners.

Ms. Brown, who has been an educator in the Sayville School District since 1999, was honored for two activities related to the Environmental Studies curriculum, which she envisioned and implemented to enhance her students' learning experiences. The programs, titled Green's Creek's Watershed Environmental Studies and Environmental Science Coast Rica Experience, afford opportunities for students to interact with the environment in a meaningful and beneficial manner.

"Ms. Brown was educated and trained as a scientist and she brings valuable insight and real world experiments into the classroom," commented Dr. Clyde Payne, Dean of Dowling College's School of Education. "Getting out into the environment to study our surroundings is a treat for her students; you can see their excitement and keen interest."

Ms. Brown has been recognized as High School Science Teacher of the Year from the Science Teachers Association of New York State and received the Terri Peters Grant for Forensic Analysis of Ancient Egyptian Artifacts from Archaeological Digs and the Geology Service Award. Ms. Brown is a member of the Golden Key National Honor Society and is listed in Who's Who Among America's Teachers.

Prior to becoming a science teacher, Ms. Brown was a Senior Environmental Scientist from EEA, Inc., where she was responsible for wetland restoration projects in the Long Island region. She was also an Environmental Scientist for Stone & Webster Engineering Corporation and a Field Ecologist/Geologist for TAMS Consultants, Inc.

Ms. Brown earned a Bachelor of Arts in Biology and Bachelor of Science in Geology from Queens College, a Master's degree in Environmental Science from Long Island University, and is certified to teach General Science, Earth Science and Biology.

A special feature announcing Ms. Brown's award will air soon on News 12. In June the award winners and their guests will be honored at a special dinner.
