Dowling College Library & NY Civil Liberties Union Present 'Faces of Liberty'
- Photo-Journal Display on Bill of Rights, Civil Liberties and New Yorkers -
The Dowling College Library and New York Civil Liberties Union (NYCLU) will showcase "Faces of Liberty," a traveling photo-journal display about the Bill of Rights, Civil Liberties and New Yorkers. The exhibit, which is free and open to the public, will be on display through March 29, 2006 on the second floor of the Dowling College Library, located at the Racanelli Learning Resources Center at the historic Rudolph Campus in Oakdale.
An educational project by the New York Civil Liberties Union Foundation and its Nassau Chapter, "Faces of Liberty" puts human faces on complex civil liberties issues by documenting the challenges of ordinary men, women and students who faced unpopularity and adversity when standing up for their beliefs.
The exhibit will highlight significant civil liberties cases over the decades in New York State, such as:
- Gays and lesbians denied a parade permit in Suffolk County because they were "non-traditional"
- An Afro-American police officer fired for testifying against the New York City's Street Crime Unit
- High School students denied the opportunity to check out certain books in a Nassau County school library
The Dowling College Library has also uploaded an online podcast, featuring an interview with Alan Polsky, legal director of the NYCLU's Suffolk Chapter, which includes interesting points about civil liberties and Long Island.
