By a Woman's Hand: Three Dramatic Portraits of Outstanding Jewish Women Presented as part of Dowling's Line-Up of Cultural Events

As part of its year-long celebration of Jewish and Jewish-American Contributions to American Culture, Dowling College is pleased to announce By a Woman's Hand: Vignettes of Three Outstanding Jewish Women, a presentation by dramatic artist and educator Judith Goldsmith.

The event will be held on Wednesday, March 29, 2006 at 2:30 p.m. in the Hunt Room of Fortunoff Hall, located at Dowling's historic Rudolph Campus in Oakdale. This event is free and open to the public.

By a Woman's Hand dramatizes the story of three Jewish women, as fascinating as they are different. Deborah Dayan, mother of Israeli hero Moshe Dayan, reminisces about her decision to leave Russia in 1913 to settle in the land of Palestine. The biblical heroine Judith, a woman of valor who is both brave and beautiful, risks her life to save her people. Emma Lazarus, the Voice of the Statue of Liberty, expresses the essence of the meaning of America's great symbol of freedom in her most famous sonnet "The New Colossus."

Ms. Goldsmith, a resident of Woodmere, NY, is widely known for solo presentations based on Jewish themes, which she researches, devises, stages and performs. A former journalist who had been intensively trained in the dramatic arts, Ms. Goldsmith is a graduate of Barnard College and studies history at Columbia University. She is the daughter of the late Mordecai Rudensky, the Yiddish and Hebrew scholar, lecturer and Zionist pioneer.

Touring to libraries, museums, schools and colleges, community centers and religious institutions, the artist has appeared Off-Off Broadway, on radio and cable television. She was listed as a "resource person" by the Smithsonian Institution for the traveling exhibition "Hooray for Yiddish Theatre in America."

In 2004, in celebration of 350 years of Jewish life in America, Ms. Goldsmith participated in the George Washington Letter Reading Weekend at the landmark Touro Synagogue in Newport, RI.
