Dowling College and the Jewish Genealogy Society of Long Island Present ‘Arthur Szyk: A Genealogical Journey'

-- Dowling College Annual Theme Event: ‘A Celebration of Jewish and Jewish-American Contributions to American Culture' --

OAKDALE, NY – As part of its year-long celebration of Jewish and Jewish-American Contributions to American Culture, Dowling College, in partnership with the Jewish Genealogical Society of Long Island, is pleased to announce "A Genealogical Journey" on Sunday, March 26 from 1:00 – 4:00 p.m. The presentation will be held at Dowling's historic Rudolph Campus in Oakdale and is free and open to the public.

"A Genealogical Journey" will be presented by Professor Rhoda Miller, a Certified Genealogist, Vice President of the Jewish Genealogy Society of Long Island, and teacher of a credit-bearing course in family history at Dowling College. Prof. Miller's presentation will take place from 1:00 – 2:00 p.m. in the Hunt Room of Fortunoff Hall and will focus on Arthur Szyk (1894-1951), a Polish-born illustrator and political cartoonist, who used his miniaturist artistic talents in extraordinary ways. Commissioned to illuminate documents of various governments, religious texts, and children's books, Szyk's life and art was intertwined with events of the Holocaust. Devoted to democracy and Judaism, his political cartoons waged a significant anti-Nazi campaign. Using genealogical methods, the life of Arthur Szyk will emerge to reveal his significant contribution to Jewish-American culture.

Following the presentation, attendees are invited to the Racanelli Learning Center Computer Labs for a demonstration on Jewish genealogical research. Jewish Genealogical Society of Long Island members Chuck Weinstein, Nolan Altman and Woody Greenberg will provide computer demonstrations and instruction in the use of resources and strategies essential for Jewish genealogy research using Internet sites, online databases and family tree software. There will be limited seating in three congruent and consecutive afternoon workshops taking place at 2:30-3:00, 3:15- 3:45 and 4:00-4:30.

In addition, the Dowling College Library will feature a first floor exhibit of the life and work of Arthur Szyk. The exhibit will run March 1-31, 2006. Featured during the entire program will be a book display of Holocaust and genealogy related materials.
