Dowling College Presents 'The Influence of the Yiddish Language on American Popular Culture'
-- This Year's Theme: 'A Celebration of Jewish and Jewish-American Contributions to American Culture'--
As part of its year-long celebration of Jewish and Jewish-American Contributions to American Culture, Dowling College is pleased to announce Bialystok to Broadway and Beyond: The Influence of the Yiddish Language on American Popular Culture, presented by Kenneth Libo, Ph.D.
The discussion will be held on Wednesday, March 22 at 7:00 p.m. in the Ballroom of Fortunoff Hall, located at Dowling's historic Rudolph Campus in Oakdale. This event is free and open to the public.
The presentation will explore Yiddish as a language and a culture. By focusing on the five major areas of the entertainment industry: motion pictures, popular music, radio/TV, the legitimate theatre, and stand-up comedy, Dr. Libo will provide examples of how Jews left their mark by adding hundreds of Yiddish words and expressions to mainstream American English.
Dr. Libo has authored many books, essays and articles pertaining to Jewish history. Currently a professor of American Jewish History at Hunter College, Dr. Libo has worked as a freelance lecturer and writer and Curator of American Jewish History at the Museum of Jewish History in New York City. He shares the National Book Award with co-author Irving Howe for World of Our Fathers, published in 1976.
