As part of its year-long celebration of Jewish and Jewish-American Contributions to American Culture, Dowling College is pleased to announce a discussion of the life and works of Aaron Kramer, poet, translator, activist and educator, as presented by Dr. Donald Gilzinger.
The discussion will be held on Wednesday, February 15 from 7:00 * 9:00 p.m. in the Hunt Room of Fortunoff Hall, located at Dowling's historic Rudolph Campus in Oakdale. This event is free and open to the public. The talk will focus on Jewish themes in Kramer's poetry as well as his devotion to translating the works of Yiddish poets.
Kramer was a professor of English who taught at Dowling College for over thirty years before his death in 1997. His published works of poetry include Roll the Forbidden Drums! (1954) and Carousel Parkway (1980). His translations include A Century of Yiddish Poetry (1988) and The Last Lullaby: Poetry from the Holocaust (1998).
Gilzinger, a graduate of Dowling College ('69), and professor of English at Suffolk County Community College in Selden, New York, studied with Kramer. Gilzinger and Kramer became close friends and at Kramer's request in 1970, Gilzinger became his bio-bibliographer. Gilzinger's most recent publication is Wicked Times: Selected Poems of Aaron Kramer (University of Illinois Press 2004) edited with Cary Nelson.
