New Bachelor's Degree Program in Gerontology Offered at Dowling
Students interested in the fast-growing field of gerontology can earn a Bachelor of Arts degree in the subject through a new program at Dowling College, which will debut in January 2006.
"The increasing average life expectancy in the United States has swelled the ranks of older people in our population, leading to the emergence of gerontology as a significant area of study," explained Dr. Richard Resch, Provost of Dowling College.
According to the 2000 census, more than 35 million people, or 13 percent of the U.S. population, is 65 years of age or older. This figure will increase to 20 percent by 2030. The over-75 age cohort is the fastest growing segment of the population.
Gerontology is the study of old age and the aging process and is concerned with the special economic and social problems of the elderly, as well as with the physical aspects of aging. Dowling's gerontology program builds on the College's substantial liberal arts base with course work in the major from sociology, psychology, social work, management, physiology and neuroscience. A strong research component and field work are special features of the curriculum.
A degree in gerontology opens the door to a wide array of career opportunities, including many related graduate programs and numerous job opportunities immediately after graduation working with the elderly.
