Famed Local Poets to Read Their Works at Dowling College
Members of the public can enjoy readings from two famed local poets in November as Dowling College welcomes Daniel Thomas Moran, Poet Laureate of Suffolk County, and Allen Planz, former poetry editor of The Nation and a former Poet-in-Residence at the Walt Whitman Birthplace.
Moran will read his works on Monday, November 7 at 7:00 p.m. in the Hunt Room of Fortunoff Hall, at Dowling's Rudolph Campus in Oakdale. The event is sponsored by Dowling College's chapter of Sigma Tau Delta English Honor Society. A practicing Doctor of Dentistry, Moran is the author of six books of poetry, including From Hilo to Willow Pond. He has been published in many journals such as Confrontation, Nassau Review, Poetry Saltzburg Review, and Commonweal. He lives on Shelter Island with his wife Karen.
Planz will read his works on Wednesday, November 30 at 4:00 p.m. in the Ballroom of Fortunoff Hall, also located at the Oakdale Campus. Professor Virginia Walker, organizer of the event, will join Planz in poetry reading.
Planz, a licensed captain of commercial and sport-fishing vessels, is the author of many volumes of poetry, including Dune Heath, A Night for Rioting, and Giving These Words. His poetry has appeared in journals such as Long Pond Review and Wild Dog. He lives in East Hampton.
Both events are free and open to the public. For further information, contact Professor Virginia Walker, English Department, walkerv@dowling.edu
