Lake Ronkonkoma Resident Receives Coveted Jack Kent Cooke Foundation Scholarship

Carla Dyck, a resident of Lake Ronkonkoma, NY, was awarded the coveted Jack Kent Cooke Foundation undergraduate transfer scholarship, which provides $30,000 per year for up to three years to be used towards the student's full tuition and living expenses.

In this fourth year of the year of the program, the Foundation received 791 applications, from which 25 scholars were selected. "Scholars were selected on the basis of academic ability and achievement, unmet financial need, will to succeed, leadership and public service, critical thinking ability, and participation in or strong appreciation of the arts and humanities," said Matthew J. Quinn, executive director of the Foundation, in a letter sent to Dowling College President Albert E. Donor, Ph.D.

A sophomore at Dowling College, Ms. Dyck is pursuing a certification in Secondary Education. "Part of what attracted me to Dowling is its beautiful campus, personable faculty and small class sizes," said Dyck. Looking ahead, Ms. Dyck plans to teach English at a local high school here on Long Island.

The Jack Kent Cooke Foundation is a private, independent foundation, established in 2000 by the estate of Jack Kent Cooke to help young people of exceptional promise reach their full potential through education. Mr. Cooke, who died in 1997, was a businessman, sportsman, and philanthropist who owned, among other diverse holdings, the Washington Redskins football team and the Chrysler Building in New York City.
