Dowling College Celebrates Constitution Day with the Long Island Staffs of Senators Clinton, Schumer & Congress
In celebration of Constitution Day, we the people of Dowling College have planned an inaugural, elaborate Common Hour featuring representation from several Long Island Senate and Congressional offices.
The first of Dowling's new Common Hours will take place during Constitution Week on Wednesday, Sept. 14 from 3:00 - 4:30 p.m. in the Fortunoff Hall Ballroom at Dowling College's Rudolph Campus in Oakdale, NY.
The following Long Island-based staff members will gather to discuss the importance and uniqueness of the U.S. Constitution, the premise behind "We the People," their respective work in public office, and how to begin a career in public service:
- Resi Cooper, Chief of Staff of Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton's Long Island Office
- Matt Cohen, Chief of Staff of Sen. Charles E. Schumer's Long Island Office
- MaryEllen Mendelsohn, Chief of Staff for Congresswoman Carolyn McCarthy
- Jennifer Gunn, Community Outreach Coordinator for Congressman Timothy Bishop
- Others expected to join the panel
The panel will be moderated by Dowling College Trustee Robert Gaffney, who is former Suffolk County Executive.
An invitation has been extended to Senator Robert C. Byrd of West Virginia, who spearheaded Public Law 108-477, which requires educational institutions that receive Federal funds to hold an educational program on the U.S. Constitution in conjunction with Constitution Day. Dowling College will be joining with fellow colleges and universities in the area to commemorate and celebrate the U.S. Constitution.
Dowling College plans to welcome hundreds, including local high school students, teachers, Student Government Associations (SGAs), community members, and Dowling College students and faculty. The event will feature informative discussions, complimentary copies of the U.S. Constitution, and a patriotic ambiance complemented by red, white and blue décor and music by Dowling's string ensemble.
